The old mosque located in Nagari Batang Barus, Gunung Talang District, Solok Regency is one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia which is estimated to have stood since 1599. This mosque has an area of 150 square meters and its architecture as a whole is influenced by Minangkabau style. The roof structure of the mosque is made of fibers with a thickness of about 15 cm and has three levels.
In addition, this mosque has 13 windows that indicate the number of prayer rooms and 27 pillars which means that 24 pillars are from 6 tribes around the mosque that have 4 elements of traditional government while the 3 pillars are religious elements, namely imams, preachers and bilal. Next to the mosque there is a drum (drum) which is believed to be the same age as the mosque. At the beginning of the construction of the Tuo Kayu Jao Mosque, the building pattern did not use nails but was still able to stand firm.
